Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Forest Claim Nostalgic Victory Over Malmö
“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” was chanted through the stadium as Forest fans celebrated another success against Malmö. Much has occurred since Francis's winning header clinched the European Cup back in 1979, but Forest continue to treasure those memories. Equally, significant changes have taken place in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with Forest looking refreshed and earning a comfortable victory courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their prospects of advancing in the European competition.
Gaining Steam with Another Consecutive Victory
For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after finishing in sixth place in their home competition – marked a third consecutive triumph across all competitions and added to the positive energy generated from the previous week's success at Anfield. While this fixture was a re-run of Forest’s historic triumph in name, the game itself was devoid of any real tension or nerves.
It proved to be an event filled with sentiment, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third clash between the sides since the showpiece event over four decades past.
The home side leaned into the history, honoring the legends of 1979 by providing them, along with their Malmö opponents, the red-carpet treatment. Thirteen members of the Malmö's squad from that time were additionally in attendance. Both teams enjoyed a dinner together prior to the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates were given a tumultuous welcome when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a characteristically superb display was unveiled in the home stand.
Remembering History
“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed half of a large banner, in capital letters. While nobody required a reminder of what happened next, the remaining section was revealed as the squads emerged from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it stated. A second stunning tifo showed Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his right-hand man Peter Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.
Dominance from the Outset
So, the hosts had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was strong, as well. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an effort off target inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 lead by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.
It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who joined Forest as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defence led by their own academy product captain, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford FC. The home defender Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a opponent and into the path of the midfielder, who finished with his right foot from the edge of the penalty area to score his first goal since March.
Second Goal Confirms Control
Yates was implicated in the team's next goal on the brink of half-time, as well, his free header saved by the shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo poised to convert the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and only his second appearance since the autumn, was the spark, lofting a delicious ball towards Yates at the back post.
Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was turned wide off the defender Rösler, the son of former Manchester City forward Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic also earlier had a strong header smartly repelled by the keeper, who was back in place of the ex- Villa goalie Olsen.
Opponent's Struggles
This was Malmö’s first match since the domestic league concluded on 9 November, and they struggled to match Forest’s energy. Forest made it 3-0 when the defender applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a set-piece. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.
The home side then went for the jugular, with the winger dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Sangaré sent an optimistic effort off target from 30 yards. It was that kind of evenings. The manager, mindful of Sunday’s league game here against Brighton, made seven changes from the team that stunned the Reds at Anfield recently, when they also netted three times, though he called on substitutes and further fresh legs midway through the final period.
Smooth Evening for Forest
It turned out to be a hiccup-free evening for Nottingham Forest. The coach could take off the defender with the game long since boxed off and later introduced teenage defender Jimmy Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard providing “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop demonstrated they are able of a few nuggets of excitement, as well.
