Review: How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge) – Unmatched Laugh-Out-Loud Moments on TV
Alan Partridge finds himself in a predicament! But then, who isn’t these days? During his previous television outing, Alan had an on-air breakdown while hosting the light magazine show This Time, wrapping up with him excluded of the BBC. As his latest self-made endeavor begins, the light documentary How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge), the broadcaster reveals he’s encountered further difficulties by passing out in front of a guest at a business function for a Norfolk feed company. Tough times, but personalities of Partridge’s calibre know how to bounce back: tie your troubles to a national trend and see if you can get a series out of it.
Delving into Stress and Loneliness
How Are You? features Coogan’s timeless character in investigative guise, probing widespread emotional struggles that he perceives as escalating: “If I can use an outdated term, it’s just got mental!” He tries out spiritual practices, reconnect with friends from school, and take a lot of restorative country walks, alongside facing his history. Initial episodes culminate in a fraught but healing gathering with “Sidekick” Simon Denton (Tim Key), Alan’s former colleague on This Time and North Norfolk Digital radio, and as the episodes progress, we’re shown unseen clips from Alan’s stints.
For Coogan and his long-term writing/directing collaborators, How Are You? is a sideways move. While the previous show explored new ground, How Are You? sometimes rehashes past ideas: along with bringing back former styles, the whole piece resembles the mockumentaries of the last decade. As his life intertwines with the subject matter, it recalls his audio ventures.Dual Personas of the Character
This leads to a minor issue. We see two versions of Alan: Successful Alan (with high-profile jobs) and Wilderness Alan (doesn’t), and even though the underdog Alan shone in the classic series I’m Alan Partridge back in 1997, a more wistful Wilderness Alan has recently taken flight in books and audio projects. How Are You? places us inside the oasthouse and includes Kelly in the role of Katrina, a mismatched romantic partner from the podcast. However, this sad story – he refuses to accept her betrayal with a pal and business owner – seems better suited to podcast pacing, enabling mental imagery to amplify laughs. Without visuals, he seems more free: modern TV excels at pressuring the successful Alan and watching him implode, as happened on previous shows.
Comedy Through Flaws
Yet, these issues pale beside a key reality: across all platforms, he delivers the most laughs in Britain, and even placeholder Partridge has more laughs-out-loud per half-hour than competing shows. How Are You? is produced and directed by Alan, as well as starring him, which showcases his knack for blunders and misjudgments. If explosive fruit edits symbolize struggles, viewers will see it, and no one corrects his verbal errors or other mistakes in commentary. The brief pained expression he makes exiting sensing the scene went poorly consistently amuses, and the same goes for his transitional clips, topped by his earnest, flawed grins while gulping down a brew.
Memorable Scenes and Sentiments
What could be funnier than his dumpster antics? Definitely not. He is also a visual treat, with a poorly chosen hair shade, and his attire including bright trousers, contrasting shoes, multiple gilets and excited response to fashion trends.
Additionally, the theme offers peeks into his inner world that emerged with the current writers. Repeatedly, the show achieves emotional depth, where his blindness exposes pain that almost has us crying tears of emotion, then the comedy returns and laughter resumes. It succeeds because of enduring fandom: any version of Alan Partridge is always welcome back.
